Changes to WoW

May 30, 2006

I’m pretty excited about the two new races to be added to World of Warcraft Online. It’s no secret that character gen is one of my favorite parts of an MMORG.
The new Horde race will be %20Blood”>http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/townhall/bloodelves.html”> Blood Elves. Personally, I was kind of hoping for lizard people, but if you can’t have half-reptiles, then evil elves are a good second choice. Most importantly, they look awesome, by adding a Horde race that’s attractive, Blizzard is making WoW in general and the Horde in particular just a little more girl-friendly.
The Alliance race will be the http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/townhall/draenei.html“> Eredars. Again, not the lizardmen I was hoping for, nor the ugly Alli race to balance the pretty Horde race. But glowing blue looks good, and quite different from the other Alliance character types.
The next change I’d like to see from Blizzard is an adults-only server so the over-18 crowd can game without constant chatspam about Chuck Norris and l33tspeak. Wouldn’t that be great? I don’t need kids around when I’m playing pretend heroes!

Have you seen this MSN dating article?  A girlfriend writes for advice on dealing with her computer game-addicted boy, and MSN totally drops the ball by suggesting she move on to soemone more mature. As a gamer, and girlfriend of gamers, I’ve written a different answer.

Dear Tired,

Did you notice your boy’s fixation with videogames before shacking up? I mean, you must have dated him for at least a little while before moving in. Did he spend every waking moment playing City of Heroes or EverCrack then? You didn’t expect him to change because you moved in, did you?

Consider cultivating your own hobbies. What are you doing in the evenings while Boyfriend is slaying Defias Bandits? I mean besides sighing loudly and writing to Break Up Girl. You must have done something for fun before Boyfriend came along, try doing it again.

How about asking your boy to teach you to play too? MMORPGs are a fun way to bond with your boy. When you’re playing a multi-player game, you have to work as a team,  solve problems together, deal with failure and share successes. So his gaming skills are pretty important relationship skills too. World of WarCraft and Guild Wars are very girl-friendly online games to get you started.

But if your boyfriend doesn’t realize that dinner time and plans with you come first, even though his teammates need a defender to get them through Perez Park, then he’s not a gamer, he’s a jerk.

Meg

Sidenote to Lynn Harris:

I thought BreakUpGirl was the coolest superhero and I was so sad when you stopped updating! But you really let me down when you suggested that those who play videogames aren’t mature enough for a real relationship.

Desperate Housewives The Video Game

May 22, 2006

I have to confess that I do watch Desperate Housewives and I really enjoy the show and all the twisted dirty laundry that is aired every week. However I can’t say that I was especially excited when I heard that they were having a SIMS style video game coming out.

I reserved judgement until I played the game and I have and I still don’t like it. I do have to say that I have not been into these sort of sims games for a few years so that could be the reason as well. Bottom line I’ll stick to the tv show and avoid the video game.

You don’t Know Jack - game tips and hidden entertainment …

May 15, 2006

Are you a fan of the game show PC game “You Don’t Know Jack”?

Well, if you are … try a few of these to add some excitement to your game strategy and entertainment at your next party.

* Stay close to your button and hit it even if you don’t know it, it really doesn’t hurt that much to guess …
* Don’t forget to screw your neighbor
* Have fun with the announcer by typing in “f*ck you” up to a maximum of 3 times per game, each time you’ll get a different response from the announcer and something might happen to you such as giving you a new name. Its a fun addition if played at a party.
* For the fiber optic fieldtrip: If you get a gibberish question on question 3 or 4, you’ll get a field trip on question 7 and 8, respectively.

Enjoy!

So Who Did Bet on the Eredars?

May 13, 2006

The Draenei themselves, more precisely. Or the Eredars that didn’t Fall. This week, all World of Warcraft players have finally gotten confirmation of what the rumor had since quite some time already: the new Alliance race will be the Eredars, and in all honesty, my personal thought on them is that they’re not the “ugly” race we had been promised–they look quite rocking, in fact. Demon-looking, perhaps, but rocking.

null

What one may reproach to Blizzard on this is the changes applied to what had been the official lore until now: the original Eredars being corrupted by Sargeras (with two of their well-known leaders, Kil’jaeden and Archimonde, joining the Burning Legion and causing the havoc we know), while another part of them, led by Velen, left in search of a better world:

Velen saw the Legion in all its terrible might and witnessed the destruction it would wreak upon all of creation. He hastened to warn Kil’jaeden and Archimonde, but they dismissed his concerns, for they had been enticed by Sargeras’ promises. They gave Sargeras their allegiance and were transformed into colossal beings of depthless evil.

The sheer power that Sargeras commanded made direct opposition unthinkable. Velen nearly despaired, but his prayer for help was overheard. A being came to Velen and explained that it was one of the naaru, a race of sentient energy beings bent on stopping the Burning Crusade. The naaru offered to take Velen and any other like-minded eredar to safety.

Deeply relieved, Velen gathered the other eredar who had thus far refused to join Sargeras. Naming themselves the draenei, or “exiled ones” in the Eredun language, the renegades barely escaped from Argus, with the Burning Legion only moments behind. Kil’jaeden was furious with what he felt was Velen’s betrayal, and the demon vowed to hunt Velen and the rest of the draenei to the ends of the cosmos if need be.

I’m not sure if this change is such a bad thing. On the one hand, it looks like a rabbit gotten out of a hat, not to mention the reason why they’re not too fond of the Hordes races. On the other hand, I find this background a little more interesting than the previous one, and it’s not like every WoW character–especially the ones who aren’t RP characters–would know precisely about what Archimonde and Co. were before becoming corrupted…

The Wii Controller, Really?

May 11, 2006

Just when you think that you will need to start taking classes just to figure out how to use your video game controller, it seems Nintendo might be taking us back to a simplier time with their Wii Controllers.

If this is really the controller, all I can say is it’s about time. I can never remember which of 50 buttons does what anyway. It’s hard not to feel like your flying a jet with the amount of buttons we have on the most recent gaming systems.

World of Warcraft: Blood Elves In Action

May 5, 2006

Every WoW player (or almost) must be awaiting the Burning Crusade expansion, and with reason: it seems to bring quite its lot of end-game content, lore, and the new races and profession. We still don’t know what the Alliance race will be–I very much doubt it’s going to be this–but just for your eyes’ pleasure, here’s a link to a video from the Blizzcon showing the soon-to-come Blood Elves in action.

The 360° every two jumps look a bit weird to me (well, alright, it looks really weird–at least the Kaldoreis’ sommersault seemed to fit better), but I must confess that it’s going to be interesting to try one once the expansion is finally out, just for the sake of seing on my screen something a little different from my own character.
