wikiHow Founder Jack Herrick commented: “I started wikiHow to help people by offering practical education. One of the most surprising things I’ve seen is how many people want to use wikiHow to secretly improve their love life. So the Love Survival Kit was created to fulfill this need, delivering the best of our romance and relationship advice in one free app.”

Which gets me thinking… I wonder if there’s a Worse-Case Scenario Handbook app yet.

Game Review: Travians on SeeJaneGame

By Meg | March 19, 2009

I have a review of the addictive browser game Travians up over on SeeJaneGame:

Uncle Horatio has a drinking problem. The game opens with a message from your Travian’s uncle Horatio, asking you to come and help him with the ancestral estate. As he sends you on basic intro quests, it becomes apparent that Uncle Horatio has had a few drinks in his day, and that the ancestral estate is more of a run-down farmhouse. Uncle Horatio’s hiccups and rambling tales set the tone for the game, everyone in Travians is full of character. Some of the first NPCs you meet are a sheep-loving, Horatio-hating guard and a travel pig with memory issues.

As a sidenote, this review also contains my favorite screenshot, of boozy Horatio having yet another drink. I’m not that great with with screenshots, I usually get a capture about two seconds after the cool part ends, so I’m pretty pleased with this one!

Game Review: Nick Bounty

By Meg | February 8, 2009

I wrote about Nick Bounty: A Case Of The Crabs over on my personal blog, Simpson’s Paradox.

The Nick Bounty mysteries are flash games (or free downloads) from the independent Pinhead Gamescompany. The first mystery is called A Case Of The Crabsand the second The Goat In The Gray Fedorawhich gives you an idea of just how serious they are.

Nick Bounty is a parody of a hardboiled detective, with deadpan painful metaphors and black-and-white sketch noir graphics. You don’t have to love trenchcoat detective stories, old movies or retro gaming to enjoy this free flash game, but it helps.

I’ve written about feeling trapped in games with set answers, and the need to pick the “correct” choice or highest-point choice instead of the funniest dialogue choice. In Nick Bounty games, when you pick a sarcastic comment, instead of the obvious plot-advancing choice, the game shoots sarcasm right back at you.

This is a free flash game so check it out!

Kudos 2 for the Mac

By Meg | February 2, 2009

A few months ago, I reviewed the original Kudos and talked about how much I enjoyed it. Kudos 2 was quite similar, but with many more options, like the ability to change clothes and hair to make unique avatars. This is my cute Kudos 2 sim over on the left. I hate to sound so girly but I get much more attached to characters I can customize.

Today’s Positech newsletter says that Kudos 2 is now available on the Mac, so even people with a one-button mouse can play too! From the newsletter:

You can download the mac demo here:
http://www.redmarblegames.com/downloads/Kudos2Demo.dmg
And buy the game here:
http://store.esellerate.net/s.asp?s=STR807618070&Cmd=BUY&SKURefnum=SKU05843952168
As usual, the mac version is sold through, and ported by our partners at redmarblegames.com

if you don’t know about Kudos 2, it’s a turn-based life-simulation game where you get to control the choices someone makes in their life from age twenty to thirty. Think of it as a strategic version of the sims, without all the worrying about answering the door and going to the bathroom all the time.

Of course, Kudos 2 for PC is also available, and you can try out a free demo version.  Besides Kudos and Kudos 2, Positech also did the game Democracy.

Guitar Hero World Tour Review

By babar ali | November 5, 2008

Guitar Hero is one of my favorite games. I have been playing it for centuries but, never get bored of it. The game is suitable for all of audiences. Whether you are a grandfather or a child you will love this game. Guitar Hero World Tour was released on Oct 26, 2008 and was hit like its predecessors. Guitar Hero world Tour offers more than 80 songs. You can now sing and even play drums in the game. You can create your own music or songs and share it with your friends. New downloads are always available over the Xbox Live. Guitar Hero allows you to take the role of a guitarist or drummer or even a singer. If you want to take the most out of this game then you should buy the drums and guitar separately. However, you can always play the game with the joystick but, that won’t be fun. Overall Guitar Hero is a great game but, there are not much enhancements in the game and if you have played the previous versions you might not find it very interesting. But, if you haven’t played the previous Guitar Hero games then this is a must buy for you. Overall I will give it 8.0 out of 10.

PlayStation Video Store Hampered by DRM

By john terry | September 23, 2008

Ars Technica have talked to sony about Sony’s recently launched downloadable video store for the PS3, and they think that digital rights management has the potential to cripple the service.
At this year’s E3 Sony announced the the PlayStation video store which seemed to be a perfect counter Microsoft’s lucrative video marketplace, since it allowed the buyers to own the movies that they downloaded, rather than simply renting them. However, according to Sony’s DRM policies, that ownership only applies on a single PS3 or PSP system, and the films after purchase cannot be redownloaded without contacting the customer. Lincoln Davis, PlayStation Network media relations manager, told Ars Technica, “Consumer service can issue a redownload as a one-time courtesy, as provided by our guidelines, for the title to allow the consumer to go back and download the movie from their PSN download list.”
Though the restricting downloads sounds reasonable, the problem lies in the single download limit, which turns the ownership into an exteded rental.

Will Xbox Live and Playstation Network become new iTunes?

By Pulkit Chandna | June 6, 2008

Recently the band Motley Crue accomplished an unbelievable- and herculean – feat when their latest track Saints of Los Angeles registered more downloads on Xbox Live and PSN, as a Rock Band dlc, than iTunes. The band had deliberately released the track as a Rock Band dlc after research showed that gamers made up a sizable chunk of their fans. This might just be the precursor of things to come, though all tracks might not be more popular on online game services. This also gives a dekko into the digital world of the future when storage media will be tossed out of the window and digital downloads will reign.

Microsoft builds Gears of War heat with cheap edition

By Pulkit Chandna | June 4, 2008

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that Microsoft has perfected the art of marketing gigantic titles. Last year, Microsoft’s elaborate Halo 3 marketing campaign saw the game make a mockery of many video game sales records and now it is geared up to do the same with Epic’s Gears of Wars 2. The game is scheduled for a November 03, 2008 release but Microsoft, the game’s publisher, has already announced two new Gears of Wars editions – not Gears of War 2. There will soon be a two-disc collector’s edition and a generic game disc at a discounted price. The discounted copy will be priced $39.99 for the 360 and 29.99 for the PC, while the collector’s edition will lighten your pockets by $39.99.The collector’s edition will include previous GOW downloads and special GOW 2 content.

Detective Games

By Meg | May 29, 2008

A post on VGViews compares old mystery games (Laura Bow) with new mystery games (Nick Bounty). The Nick Bounty games stack up very well, and the reasons are interesting.

One of the problems with Laura Bow, and with Sierra games in general, was the many ways to accidentally kill yourself. Getting into the elevator? Oh, sorry, you didn’t say you checked to see if it was on your floor. You fall down the elevator shaft and die. Crossing the road? You’re hit by a bus and die. Petting a cat? You contract a particularly virulent strain of rabies and die. Eating some candy? Well, you get the picture.

A few days ago, I discovered the Nick Bounty mysteries, flash games(or free downloads) from the independant Pinhead Games company. The first mystery is called “A Case Of The Crabs” and the second “The Goat In The Gray Fedora”, which gives you an idea of the seriousness. (I think Laura’s boyfriend in one story was a dockworker called Steve Door)

Nick Bounty is a bit more campy, with black-and-white sketch graphics, and sarcastic comments and narration, imitating hardboiled detective novels.

Two versions of PS3 ‘unlikely’

By Nandini Seshadri | August 31, 2005

From News.Yahoo.Com

Wednesday August 31, 05:50 PM

Phil Harrison, VP of studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, has criticised Microsoft for planning to put two versions of the Xbox 360 on the market.

Microsoft recently announced that the Xbox 360 Core System, which does not include a hard disk, will retail for GBP 209.99 at launch. For GBP 279.99 you’ll be able to buy a console with a 20GB hard disk, wireless controller, Xbox Live Silver membership, HD-AV cable and removable faceplate.

Speaking at the European Game Developers’ Conference in London today, Harrison said Sony was “unlikely” to follow in Microsoft’s footsteps and offer two different versions of the PlayStation 3.

“Are there two versions of the Xbox 360 that people want to buy, is my question,” he said.

“I don’t know. This is my personal view, not my corporate view, but when I look at those formats, I think it just confuses the audience. They don’t know which one to buy, developers don’t know which one to create for, and retailers don’t know which one to stock.

“So I think we wouldn’t take that strategy. We wouldn’t create confusion,” he concluded.

However, Harrison did go on to suggest that we’ll have a variety of options to choose from in the longer term.

“There have been various versions and variants of PlayStations in the past – some run through the hardware and some through the software, and that’s worked pretty well for us, offering different value propositions to the consumer.

“Exactly what we do with the launch? Too early to tell.”

Harrison did give Microsoft props, as the youngsters say, for the Xbox Live service, telling the audience: “Microsoft has done a lot of things right, and there are certainly things that are going to form the model for many of the high quality consumer experiences that we will deliver with PS3.

“But I think our role is always to go beyond, to push further,” he continued.

“I’m not in a position today to share with you all the details but PS3 was a network platform from the very beginning, and that is designed into every aspect of the machine.”

Harrison said the service will offer free downloads along with content you’ll be able to buy direct from the publisher – “We want other companies to see the PS3 as a platform that they can exploit for their content, services and communities.”

He was also keen to emphasise Sony’s commitment to producing innovative games: “We do have the privilege of being the platform holder, and of having the opportunity and, I think, the responsibility to invest in more esoteric titles.

“We have to continue to put creativity and innovation first, otherwise we will turn into a formulaic industry and consumers will go elsewhere.”

And, in contrast to his recent comments slamming the Nintendo DS as “a gimmick”, Harrison was full of praise for Nintendogs as a game that’s pushing the boundaries: “I briefly played Nintendogs at E3 and I think it’s absolutely fantastic.

“I’m very admiring of what Nintendo have done with that game… I would love for us to go and create that kind of immersion for a game on the PSP.”

Harrison went on to say that while innovation is important, financial considerations still have to be taken into account. “We are a business, we do have to make a profit. We can’t just do this for the fun of it – we’re not art house theatre. We have to balance the two.”

Harrison then turned to the PlayStation Portable, which finally launches in Europe at midnight tonight after a series of slips.

“Obviously we didn’t plan it that way, factors outside of our control contributed to us having to delay the launch.

“Although the benefit to European consumers is that the machine we launch tomorrow has got a Version 2 operating system on it, there are more games, more movies, and the production output for our factories in Japan will be able to sustain demand in the US and Europe,” Harrison said.

We’re also promised more downloadable PSP content in the future – but we’re going to have to pay for it, apparently.

“We will be building some premium content next year and we will be charging for download,” he confirmed, adding that this will be sold on a pay-per-download basis – so once you’ve handed over your cash you own the right to download it again, should you accidentally erase it from your Memory Stick or some such.

Harrison then took the opportunity to hit back at those who have criticised the PSP launch line-up, telling the audience: “Don’t judge the life of the format on the first games that come out for it – remember we launched PS2 with Fantavision. Although it’s a lovely piece of software, it’s by no means the software that will define the format.

“I think it’s natural that when a format first comes out, the games that you make are the games that you know how to make, because you only have a limited amount of time to make them,” Harrison continued.

“Then the next games to come out on the platform are where the innovation starts to happen.

“We’re doing some things internally and I know a lot of people externally are too. We’re really starting to see that innovation coming through on PSP, and it will certainly come through on PS3.”

And as for Harrison’s favourite PSP game of the moment? “I’ve nearly finished Ridge Racer but the Max Tour’s got me. That’s probably the one I’ve played the most intensively.”

Harrison went on to suggest that games should become “more like soap operas”, with developers delivering “similar, reliable experiences in a friendly way to a set of characters and stories that change dynamically over time.”

This is designed to generate a “water cooler experience” in the same way the TV series Lost has (Harrison mentioned Lost several times during his speech, suggesting he is a big fan. And aren’t we all).

“Some game designers are starting to think about this, and I think over the next five years it’ll become more common,” Harrison predicted.

Unsurprisingly, he declined to comment on a possible price point for the PS3, telling the audience: “It would be foolish of me to make any comments about pricing at this early stage.”

“I’m sure Ken will continue to be enigmatic about that.”

The Chronicles of Spellborn

By Yzabel | July 29, 2005

Caught on The Chronicles of Spellborn official website, here come the first in-game screenshots. There, a Quarterstone alley lies next to the Mount of Heroes. Check out for more on the screenshots download page.

The Chronicles of Spellborn is a MMORPG currently in development for PC. Said to boast “an original setting and storyline and offering a distinctive art style, the game is being built using the renowned Unreal® Engineâ„¢”. It’s very hard right now to tell whether it will hold its promises or not (I’m used to every MMORPG not holding them completely, so I never put the cart first, so to say), but their approach to conceiving the game, even simply through the artwork, sure looks like something interesting and almost delicate. Going to keep an eye on it.
