  • Sonic the Hedgehog Episode 4

I do a weekly trivia night with friends, and when we can’t come with the answer, we always use Sonic the Hedgehog.  Which actor won an Oscar for playing another Oscar-winning actor? Sonic the Hedgehog! Which US president had the largest shoe size? Sonic the Hedgehog! With the new Sonic 4 for Xbox and iToys, it might actually be the real answer.

SEGA® is incredibly happy at the overwhelmingly positive response to Sonic The Hedgehog™ 4 Episode I from both press and fans around the world. SEGA wants to ensure that we’re delivering the best Sonic experience possible.

With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, SEGA has decided to extend the development of the game and will now release Sonic The Hedgehog™ 4 Episode I in the latter half of 2010. The additional time will allow the Development Team to focus on keeping the game high quality, continuing tuning and balancing of levels and interface and overall maintaining the kind of polish that an important game like this demands, ultimately providing fans with an unrivaled classic Sonic feel.

SEGA is also pleased to confirm that Sonic The Hedgehog™ 4 Episode I will be coming to the iPhone and iPod touch via Apple’s iTunes App Store.

Sonic The Hedgehog™ 4 Episode I is developed specifically for the download market and will be available via Microsoft Xbox LIVE Arcade, Sony PlayStation Network, Nintendo WiiWare and the iTunes App Store in late 2010.

    Game Review: Cake Mania 3

I have a new review of Cake Mania 3 up over at Casual Gamer Chick.

cake mania 3 Cake Mania 3 is an adorable time-management game for the Nintendo DS. Jill, our heroine from Sandlot Games’ PC versions of the Cake Mania imprint, is cheerfully preparing for her wedding day when she accidentally breaks a time-bender (I suppose it was wedding decor), and sends herself and her loved ones off through space and time, only to be saved through extensive cake baking! Jill must rescue her displaced friends and family, repair the time-bender and make it back for her wedding – all by making and decorating cakes.

Once Jill lands in a new location and sets up her bakery (“Oh look,“ Jill notices, “My oven works in ancient China! That’s not weird at all!”), the top screen is used for progress stats, like time spent and money earned, and icons of waiting customers. The bottom screen is Jill’s bakery. Players send Jill rushing from oven to customer with a tap of the stylus. A checkmark appears over the future actions in Jill’s queue so you can easily keep track of what she’s doing. Tap the checkmark to remove a planned action from Jill’s to-do list.

    Facebook’s Secret Code

Just in case you don’t have enough time-wasters on Facebook (I’m looking at you, FarmVille players), here’s something new to try:

The Konami code, named after the Japanese company behind classics like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and the Nintendo Contra classics, is one of video-gaming’s most storied cheats. During development of the 1985 Konami arcade game Gradius, a programmer found the game to be too difficult and programmed in a key sequence — up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A — that, if entered, gave the player a set of the game’s power-ups. As word of the shortcut spread, other programmers aped his cheat, working the same sequence into their own games. The Konami code works in nearly 100 video games now, including Frogger and Dance Dance Revolution.

And now it works for Facebook. Try it for yourself — log in to Facebook and type the code: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, enter. It doesn’t matter where you type it: just have the Facebook page open and active. The result? Lens flares — those groovy circles that appear when pointing a camera into the sun — appear on your page with every click of the mouse. Useful? Not in the slightest. But they’re easy enough to get rid of — logout and they’re gone.

Reading this made me immediately made me tab over to Facebook and type in XYZZY to see what would happen

I recently reviewed My Boyfriend, Women’s Murder Club:  Games of Passion, and Lost in Blue 2 for the Nintendo DS (more on Lost in Blue 2 here), as well as Mystery of Cleopatra, Tales of Monkey Island: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, and Nancy Drew Dossier: Resorting To Danger on the computer (Not to mention hints for Resorting To Danger!). • After  Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade Of Grey, and Women’s Murder Club: Death In Scarlet comes a new WMC, Women’s Murder Club: Crimes of Passion, this time for the Nintendo DS and DSi.  I think the portable DS system, with the stylus-driven games, is perfect for casual gaming, and I’m seeing more and more story-based casual games coming out. I’ve been carrying the  Sims (or Sims Castaway!) in my purse, and I also saw a Nancy Drew game for the DS the other day.

From the Women’s Murder Club: Crimes of Passion press release:

“When I dreamed up the ladies of the Women’s Murder Club, I knew they were women of action; women on the go,” said James Patterson. “I never dreamed they could come to life like they have in the Nintendo DS version. This new game gives fans a chance to become a member of the Women’s Murder Club anytime, anywhere.”

And by “anytime, anywhere” I think he means “while waiting at the airport”.

I was lucky enough to get a look at some screenshots from the upcoming game. I had to include this one, because there just aren’t enough science-themed puzzles in games targeted to women!

Obligatory hidden objects minigame. It works well in a mystery-solving game, but I just don’t see what’s fun about squinting at the screen.

Nintendo DSi users will get a special feature that uses the camera, (can’t wait to see how they integrate that) but the game will also be available for the regular DS.

    E3 Previews

I’m so jealous of everyone heading to E3! I’m sure I’ll be going too, once I become a famous games journalist, but for now, I’m just looking on enviously at all the new games and announcements of upcoming games.

I’m pretty excited about LEGO Rock Band, even though a lot of people are complaining that it’s slapping the LEGO name on just another Rock Band game, or slapping the Rock Band name on just another LEGO game. To me, this is a bit like complaining that mint chocolate chip ice cream has MINT and CHOCOLATE CHIPS.

Here’s the trailer, so you can see for yourself.

  • Game Review: Sims 2 on the DS

I wrote this up for my own blog, but I wanted to share it here, too.

You’re on your way from someplace much cooler to someplace much cooler when your car breaks down in Strangetown, and the Sims 2 game begins. A local yokel says he can fix that, but while you’re waiting (it goes without saying that the required part’s on backorder in Strangetown), you take over as manager of a creepy, rundown hotel, in this little town of odd events.

Almost everyone who’s played the Sims knows that the ghosts, alien abductions and general parmanormal silliness are the best part of the Sims, so the makers of Sims 2 for the DS toned down the time spent watching your Sim sleep or cook dinner, and increased the zany encounters.

You play as one Sim, not a household, and the story is much more linear than the PC versions.  It’s also no longer a sandbox game. Players have limited control over hotel guests, but important penthouse guests arrive, check in, and send players on unavoidable missions. I happened to like the penthouse missions, especially goth cultist Ava Cadarva, but it wasn’t the almost-unlimited sandbox play style we knew and loved in other Sims games.

    Shaun The Sheep Review

A new casual game review from Killer Betties:

    Shaun_and_Bitzer_Talk

Not baaad at all. Shaun is based on the stop motion animated series Wallace and Gromit by Aardman Animation. I do remember Wallace and Gromit but my 7 year-old quickly put me up to speed letting me know that Shaun has his very own cartoon show. The series are not as well known in the US and the game could go either way and become a sleeper hit.

The premise is that the Farmer went to town and forgot to close the gate. Shaun must rescue the flock that is lost all through the farm. Navigating the farm through the map gets old very quickly but the mini games are little gems that will range from cute, fun and imaginative to the exhausting to repetitive and you will find yourself blowing (huh?) onto the controller.

Seems like a cute kids in the style of Chicken Run for sheep!

  • DALLAS (January 9, 2008) – MumboJumbo, a leading developer and publisher of casual games, has entered into a publishing agreement with phenomedia publishing gmbh to bring their latest Moorhuhn titles to Nintendo DS™ system in the North American market.

The three-title deal includes Star Karts, Atlantis Quest and The Pharaoh’s Treasure, all of which will launch in 2009 for the popular handheld gaming console at retail prices of $19.99 each.

“We’re very excited to bring these three Crazy Chicken games to the North American audience,” said Mark Cottam, CEO of MumboJumbo. “The strong character, variety of game play and overall production values of these titles make them a perfect fit for MumboJumbo.”

Developed by phenomedia, Star Karts follows the zany Crazy Chicken through an intergalactic racing competition, while Atlantis Quest is a side-scrolling action (or platformer) game that takes Crazy Chicken through 30 levels of challenges both above and below the sea. In The Pharaoh’s Challenge, players can try their hand at puzzle-solving in the Egyptian-themed adventure.

“We would like to tie Moorhuhn’s latest three adventures on Nintendo DS to international success of Moorhuhn DS. Each of these games represents a different genre – racing game, Jump&Run and puzzle – and thus not only emphasizes the platform’s diversity, but also that of the strong character Moorhuhn itself,” said Helge Borgarts, phenomedia publishing gmbh’s CEO.

Crazy Chicken originally launched in Germany as Moorhuhn X and quickly developed a league of fans who found the zany and precocious chickens entertaining and comical. Bringing the mischief and mayhem to Nintendo DS will serve to broaden the game’s already impressive audience.

  • Pokemon Diamond Review

Pokemon Diamond: This was the first game of the Pokemon series that i played on the DS. I got the chance to play the game at my cousin’s house and i simply loved it so i decided to buy it. The game was released by Nintendo and Game Freak in mid 2007 and is a role playing game. Its ESRB rating is everyone. The main story is that you (either a girl or a boy) are living in some strange town. A professor named Rowan sends you and one of your best friends on a mission to collect as much information on the Pokemons that live in that area as you can. After that you will go on to gather information on Pokemons by fighting and capturing them.
That was the story, now let us come to the good points of the game. The game features colorful environments as you have seen in Pokemon cartoons. One thing that i would really appreciate that has been done by nintendo is the introduction of Online gameplay. The story is full of twists and turns and it is long enough to keep you busy for hours.
Overall, it is a great game and the gameplay is full of variations. it is a must have for any DS owner.

    More On BobWatch

I posted earlier about Bob, the developer who’s going into lockdown to convince Nintendo to publish his game. Joystiq has a newer post about what’s going on now. Bob’s Game

Usually I read about game developers with a touch of envy. I imagine days spent making games more fun or translating a really cool concept into a fun activity to share. (My boyfriend, who does work in game dev tries to convince me that it isn’t all lollipops and rainbows)

But this story… is just a little weird.

You’ve got to feel for Bob Pelloni. The guy sinks 15,000 hours over five years into making a DS RPG — completely by himself — called Bob’s Game. Now, when his labor of love is finally ready to be shown to the world, the poor guy can’t wrestle the last thing he needs, a disc containing the development kit (or SDK), away from Nintendo. After 17 weeks of trying, Bob’s getting serious and locking himself in solitary confinement for 100 days in protest.

Bob’s got no internet, no television, just the tools he needs to work
and a phone to check his email (in the hopes that Nintendo tries to get
a hold of him). If you’d like to pitch in and help out, Bob’s asking
that you drop a line to Big N. We’ll do the same, and let you know what we hear.

Ok, it’s a lot weird. What do you think?

Citing a subpar holiday season and Sony’s Playstation 3 still being the most expensive console, an article in the Wall Street Journal this

  • I saw this today on Gears of War 2 Tops Sales Chart on PlayGirlz:

Nintendo might be sitting pretty at the top in the console wars, but when it comes to software, Microsoft’s got the lead. The economic crisis seems to be hitting everyone but the world of video games. Anxious shoppers tossed games into their carts like they were Halloween candy. And the results are in.

    *
Gears of War 2 (Epic, Xbox 360) – 1.56 million units
    *
Call of Duty: World at War (Treyarch, Xbox 360) – 1.41 million units
    *
Wii Play (Nintendo, Wii) – 796,000 units
    *
Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) – 697,000 units
    *
Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii) – 637,000 units
    *
Call of Duty: World at War (Treyarch, PS3) – 597,000 units
    *
Guitar Hero World Tour (Vicarious Visions, Wii) – 475,000 units
    *
    Left 4 Dead (Valve, Xbox 360) – 410,000 units
    *
    Resistance 2 (Insomniac, PS3) – 385,000 units
    *
Wii Music (Nintendo, Wii) – 297,000 units

The Xbox 360 managed to get 3 out of the 10 spots, including the number 1 and 2 positions, thanks to Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty. But Nintendo dominated in numbers once again, picking up half the slots. And that leaves only 2 slots for the PS3, with Call of Duty and Resistance 2. Alas, Resistance 2 was the only PS3 exclusive to make it on the list. Sorry, Sony.

I was pleased about this because someone who lives in my house works for Epic on GoW2 so it’s nice to see his work rewarded.

    Mortal Combat Vs DC Universe

I was at my friend’s house on the last Sunday night. I was fascinated by the new game Mortal Combat Vs DC Universe. It is a first time ever for all the DC comic characters together, and grouped them together to against the once popular game “Mortal Combat”. I had played mortal combat some 12 years ago, when we were still playing with Nintendo games.

You can pick your characters to fight against the computer, or you can follow a story line, which is realyl interesting, and with great graphic. I love this game, because I haven’t played mortal combat for long while. Now it is available again. DC comic characters with all the popular characters included in this game, such as Superman, batman, green lantern, catwoman, and wonder woman, etc….. You will enjoy this game. It is available on Playstation 3.

  • Casual Game Review: Zenses

My friend Rick, of Panda Passport and Little Red Blog fame, reviewed Zenses for Nintendo DS. I love casual games and Rick is a great writer, and the combination makes Zenses Rainforest Review: Do You Want a Break From Frustrating Games? much more than the usual “This game r0x0r!!!1!1!” (or sux0rs, I guess).

Zenses Rainforest is a puzzle game. Well, more specifically it’s a group of six puzzle games. Picture Tetris in a Japanese rock garden with a waterfall, and some pot-smoking Enya fans sitting nearby. That’s kinda like Zenses.

I started playing this game after trying out Quantum of Solace for about an hour. I’m a pretty casual gamer, and maybe I just don’t have the patience required for the Jame Bond game. But in any case, 60 minutes of repeatedly trying to follow Judy Dench’s commands was enough to make me want to put my head through the wall. I quit before even finishing the training round. And that’s when I decided to give Zenses a try.

Unlike many other games that have a difficulty level setting, Zenses is a little more “Zensitive” about choosing its words. Rather than making you feel like a wuss for choosing the easy level, Zenses asks you to choose the difficulty level by sliding a selector up the intensity bar. The default is zero intensity, which is kinda like Zenses telling you “Hey man, don’t over-do it.”

Kind of makes me want to try it… when I finish playing Harvest Moon!

  • SONY PSP GRAPHICS

First I was scouting to buy a mobile game. Being a video fan since I was young I’m very picky in my console and games. I own a Super Nintendo, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation1, Playstation 2 and Xbox 360. Now I’m scouting for a mobile game. Of course I wasn’t expecting mobile games to have great graphics like xbox 360 or PS3. So I choose between Nintendo DS and PSP. Finally, I choose PSP, because of the god of war game series. I have just finish god of war 1 and 2, chain of olympus is only available in PSP. I was surprise the PSP has a good graphics. It is an equal I think to PS2. To think of it’s little screen and very little packaging could produce a graphics equal to a regular console. I never regretted it one bit. I’ve been playing it a lot. My plan was only to play when I’m not at home, like when where on the road with my parents or just outside being bored. But now I’ve been playing it more than I’m playing my other consoles. For one, it’s more lighter to our electricity bill, against a regular console like PS3 hookup with a 40″ plasma tv. It is really a bargain.

  • Games in Nintendo Wii

Games in nintendo wii is really great for everyone. Everyone now is acquiring the console because of it’s gameplay. Surprising a great percentage of it is the middle age people. Because of it’s gameplay the player gets to exercise while playing. Take for example it’s tennis game. Where the player will actually swing the controller to hit the ball. Actually silly to see at times, but even doctors have been recommending it. Players or people have a chance to exercise in their living room. You can play golf and tennis without the sun and the high membership fee of clubs. And also, you can play the hit tv game dancing with the stars in nintendo wii. You can dance by shaking the controller, coordination and timing is the factor in the game. Nintendo wii introduce a very unique gameplay, the controller which has a sensor, that the charcter that you controlling in the screen imitates your hand movements in the screen. It’s like in the tennis game, the swing of the player depends on how you swing your controller. In the boxing game, you move your controller to dodge the opponents punches, it enhances your reflexes. After a game other player also works out a sweat. Beats other console of just pushing the Y button or the triangle button really fast, only the fingers gets an exercise. Although the graphics is inferior compare to pS3 and xbox 360, ingenuity and inventive we have to give nintendo wii a two thumbs up.
