November – December New Games Round-Up

By Meg | January 4, 2009

In beta news, I beta-tested the awesome Nancy Drew: Lights, Camera, Curses and the awful Tropical Dream. Listen to a short podcast comparing the two.

In casual games, I reviewed the hidden objects game Ancient Secrets and the addictive island sim MyTribe.  I also got a review copy of the Princess Bride Game, an actual hard copy, a first in my game-reviewing career! Overall, the beloved Princess Bride characters made a sweet casual game a classic. On Thumbgods only, I reviewed Alabama Smith.

In January, I’ve got a couple new reviews in the works (including the hidden-objects Mystery Case Files: Castle Ravenhearst). What games would you like to see here? What games are you planning to play this month?

The Princess Bride Game

By Meg | December 29, 2008

A review of the new Princess Bride Game from Worldwide Biggies, on Simpson’s Paradox. It’s hard to stay objective about anything Princess Bride!

Although I was super excited to get my review copy of the Princess Bride game,
I wasn’t sure whether I would automatically like this game because it’s
based on the Princess Bride, or hate it because it’s based on the
Princess Bride but different. (see also: why I dislike movies based on books I liked)

The Princess Bride Game
is divided into 5 games, separated by the grandfather’s narration and
animated cutscenes from the movie. The first one, As You Wish, is
absolutely brilliant. You play as Wesley, doing farm chores. Your time
management objectives are interrupted when Buttercup shows up and wants
you to do something for her. I’ve always though Buttercup was kind of a
pain with her imperious requests, so the game was true to the spirit of
the movie and fun to play.

Retro iPhone App Coming Soon!

By Meg | December 28, 2008

Thanks to Jennifer of Casual Gamer Chick for this press release about Big Head Games new iPhone toy:

BHG are today pleased to announce the submission of iPhone game Retro to the Apple store.

Grabbing the best bits of retro gaming and wrapping them in glorious visuals BHG have produced the perfect game for the iPhone platform.

True to the traditions of classic Sci-fi, Retro is set in the near future, our experiments to harvest the Sun´s energy is about to send it super nova, your mission is to rescue scientists stranded on orbiting planets.

Retro takes you on 23 missions deep below the surface of orbiting planets, the super smooth control system allows you to tilt the iPhone to turn the craft, tapping the screen to apply thrust, gliding through the tightest caves to find stranded scientists, keeping one eye on the fuel and shield and the other on the rocky outcrops.

23 missions with gameplay that includes laser gates and teleporters.

Retro will be in the store during the Christmas holidays.

I’m currently playing through a backlog of games like Ancient Secrets, MyTribe and the awesome new Princess Bride Game (not to mention the awful Tropical Dream disaster). Plus, with the holidays and all, my family wanted me to get off the computer and spend time with them. Can you imagine!?!?

Anyway, let me know if you get a chance to play the new Retro!
